In recent years, reducing energy consumption in buildings has become one of the major challenges in Iran and worldwide. Phase Change Materials (PCMs), due to their ability to store thermal energy in the form of latent heat, have emerged as an effective solution for improving building energy performance. However, their relatively low thermal conductivity has limited their widespread application. In the present study, a composite consisting of RT-55 paraffin-based phase change material and open-cell thermowood panels is proposed as an innovative approach to enhance thermal conductivity and improve the thermal performance of building envelopes.

The research was conducted using a combined numerical simulation and experimental methodology. In the simulation phase, a reference building model was developed and analyzed using Revit, Insight, and DesignBuilder software under the climatic conditions of Tehran, based on weather data from 2019–2020. In the experimental phase, a laboratory test rig consisting of a heat source (45 W and 90 W), an air duct, and two thermowood specimens (with and without RT-55 paraffin) was constructed. Four different configurations, including paraffin embedded in the inner, middle, and outer layers of the thermowood panel, as well as a control case without paraffin, were investigated at air velocities of 2, 2.5, and 3 m/s. Surface temperatures at six measurement points, outlet air temperature, and pressure drop were recorded and analyzed.
The results demonstrated that, in the first configuration (paraffin embedded within the panel), the average surface temperature decreased by approximately 2–4 °C compared with the sample without paraffin. The maximum incoming heat flux during summer was reduced by 30–47%. Increasing the air velocity from 2 to 3 m/s resulted in an additional temperature reduction of approximately 1.5 °C. Furthermore, the pressure drop induced by the thermowood panel was negligible, remaining below 2 Pa. Simulation results also revealed that the application of the proposed composite on the south-facing wall provided the greatest thermal energy savings.
Overall, the combination of open-cell thermowood and RT-55 paraffin can serve as an effective passive thermal energy storage system, reducing building energy consumption while improving indoor thermal comfort.
